Story Times to resume in Shawnee Print

The Shawnee Public Library invites children 3 and older and their caregivers to Story Times, which run at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Librarians will present books, poetry, nursery rhymes, music, fingerplays, learning concepts and creative movement. Programs last about 45 minutes and usually based are on a weekly theme.

The Storytimes are offered most Tuesdays at these times from Sept. 21 through Nov. 9. Registration is not required.

Shawnee offers beginning computer series Print

The Shawnee Public Library will provide several days of classes for beginning computer users later this month.

The three-part series is designed for the absolute beginner and is a hands-on introductory course in computers.

The schedule includes:

  • Introduction to Computers, 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20. The class emphasizes learning the parts of the computer and operating the mouse.
  • Introduction to the Internet, 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21. The class covers the basics of navigating the Internet, including use of search engines.
  • Introduction to e-mail, 10 a.m. or 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22. The class helps students create and use one of the free e-mail services available online.

Book Buzz Brunch Bunch to meet Print

The Book Buzz Brunch Bunch meets for its monthly book discussion at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17, in the conference room of the Shawnee Public Library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Guests are invited to the informal book discussion group to discuss their latest great read and look for a suggestion for what to read next.

Registration is not required. For more information, call Lisa Lempges at 275-6353.

Training on Census data website planned in Shawnee Print

The U.S. Census will be at the Shawnee Public Library to offer a free training on using Census data available on the American FactFinder website.

The training will be offered in the library’s Community Room at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16.

The class covers basic Census terms, geography and concepts and the different types of information collected in the Decennial Census and the American Community Survey. Participants will learn how to create a Fact Sheet and a Quick Table for their community. They also will receive a packet of handouts with step by step instructions and additional resources.

“Go Digital!” with downloadable books in Shawnee Print

The Shawnee Public Library seeks to help its readers “Go Digital!” and learn about the world of downloadable books and videos.

The program will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9, in Community Room A/B at the library, 101 N. Philadelphia Ave.

Participants will learn about the Pioneer Library System’s servives for downloadable audibooks, ebooks and videos. Those attending are encouraged to bring their iPods, eReader or laptops to learn more about using the services.
