Moore Chess Camp

The Learners Chess Academy will conduct a one-week chess camp for kids affected by the May tornadoes in Moore. Working with the Moore Public Schools and the Moore Public Library, the free camp will run June 10-14 with sessions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. – noon on Friday. A lunch will also be provided each day for camp participants.

The chess camp will be conducted at Kelley Elementary School, 1900 N. Janeway in Moore.

Registration for the camp is limited to 30 participants in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Required registration can be done in person at the Moore Public Library, 225 S. Howard, by phone by calling 793-4347, or online.

Learners Chess Academy executive director Victor Lopez and former New Mexico State Chess Champion Doug Thigpen will be in Moore to conduct the camp.

“Sadly, in the wake of the May 20th tornado in Moore, Oklahoma, tens of thousands of families have lost their homes, and children are left with uncertain futures and, in many cases, deprived of fun summer activities that they had planned. That is why Doug and I, with the support of many local sponsors in New Mexico and around the region, will conduct the camp in Moore. We want to help,” said Lopez.

Founded in 2010, and recently reincorporated as a 501c3 not-for-profit organization, Learners Chess Academy is an Albuquerque-area educational program with the mission to enhance child development by using the game of chess to promote and stimulate intellectual maturity, social skills, and leadership development.

“We do not just teach kids chess, we teach them to learn by compassionately leading them through the process of paying attention and drawing on their experiences,” said Lopez. “Furthermore, to promote leadership and a setting of communal learning, we teach leadership development skills to encourage players to communicate and to teach each other what they know and how they learn.”

Information about the camp and the Learners Chess Academy is available at where donations can be made to directly support the Moore project.
