Ventriloquist Gary Owen coming to Noble Public Library

Gary Owen will bring a few of his lovable friends – in the form of a number of distinctive puppets – to show off a collection of stories via his ventriloquism skills in this year’s Summer Reading Program.

Owen will come to the Noble Public Library at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 24.

Owen has spent more than 35 years perfecting his craft and will bring children stories and lessons through his interactions with his puppets. He’s added many stories from his experiences that will in turn add to what he has to offer this summer in PLS hometown libraries.

“I just love what I do and I’m always interested in picking up new things,” Owen said.

Owen’s career path started in his early years in southern California listening to legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully call Los Angeles Dodgers’ games and enjoying his distinctive voice. Then later Owen got a suggestion from a high school speech and drama teacher who heard his talent from how he read during an assignment. That led him to a radio station in Elk City straight out of high school, which eventually led to bigger assignments in the Oklahoma City area.

Many will hear Owen’s voice and think “I’ve heard that somewhere before.” If you’re a fan of PBS broadcasting on OETA in the metro area, then you’ve heard Owen’s voice introducing shows on the network.

Owen also has done voices for several characters in theme shows at Frontier City in Oklahoma City and is in his 18th year hosting a radio show on science and technology that is broadcast on several stations in the state.

He’s also been featured for his work on “Good Morning America” and in Time Magazine and is a member of the Oklahoma Speakers Bureau.

This year’s Summer Reading Program is presented with the support of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Oklahoma Arts Council, Hitachi Computer Products of America, The Anne and Henry Zarrow Foundation, Sonic, Kirkpatrick Family Fund, the Pioneer Library System Foundation and Friends of the Library groups throughout the Pioneer Library System.
