Norman hosts Poetry Workshop, Poetry Slam

Microphone

The Norman Public Library invites local poets and those with a desire to begin to write poetry to a Poetry Workshop, learning from several local experts on the art, from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday, March 31, in the Lowry Room of the library, 225 N. Webster Ave.

The program is for ages 13 and up and features a variety of pointers for beginning and advanced poets alike.

The workshop presenters are:

Moira Ozias writes in many forms and is Associate Director of the OU Writing Center. She sees the potential of poetry for individual and community change and encourages everyone from the Norman community to bring their voices out for this year's Poetry Month.

Jessie St. Amand is a former OU English student who now co-runs OU Write Club's series of open mic nights and poetry slams in Norman.

Dr. Zakk Flash is an anarchist political writer, poet, and multidisciplinary artist from Norman, Oklahoma. He is the curator of the Outlaw Poets Society, a collective of poets with roots in the mid-1970s. He is a frequent contributor to Write Club and the Extreme Championship Poetry slam series.

A week later, on Friday, April 6, the library will host its first Norman Poetry Month Poetry Slam. Signups will start at 6 p.m. and the slam itself begins at 6:15.

The Slam will feature Dr. Flash as the slam master and St. Amand as the sacrifice poet. Audience participation will be welcomed and encouraged, and winners will receive prizes.

The activities are part of the library’s 16thannual poetry contest celebrating National Poetry Writing Month in April. The contest culminates with a Poetry Celebration April 26.
