Norman Public Library hosts ninth African American Read-In

The Norman Public Library is bringing together voices from the community to join with thousands of others across the country in a commemoration of Black History Month.

The library will host its ninth African-American Read-In at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, in the Lowry Room, 225 N. Webster Ave.

The library features a number of readers of poems and stories celebrating the month. The featured reader will be Norman Police Chief Keith Humphrey, who took over leading the department last summer.

“Chief Humphrey is enthusiastic about being a part of this year’s events,” said Leslie Tabor, branch manager of the Norman Public Library. “As a newcomer to Norman he has made a positive impression on the community and the library is excited about his participation.”

The day encourages many impromptu readings from audience members, who are invited to read short two-minute excerpts from published African American authors. The library will display a selection of books by African American authors.

The event also features a performance by the Kennedy Elementary Steppers. And back for a third year will be Skyler Little, a high school senior who will give a monologue on black history.

The event also serves as the first day tickets will be made available for the library’s popular Crowns Tea. Tickets are free but limited in number, and distribution will begin after the conclusion of the Read-In. The Crowns Tea will take place in two seatings, at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., on Sunday, Feb. 26.

No registration is needed to attend the Read-In.

The Black History Month presentations are part of the Norman Public Library Cultural Series and are funded by the Norman Arts Council, Pioneer Library System Foundation, the Friends of the Norman Library, Norman Chamber of Commerce and the Pioneer Library System.
