Library program seeks volunteer tutors for students of English as a Second Language
The Pioneer Library System’s Cleveland County Literacy Services Department will host a tutor training for prospective volunteer tutors at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Lowry Room of the Norman Public Library, 225 N. Webster Ave.
This training is specifically designed for volunteers who want to work with learners of English as Second Language in Cleveland County. Registration may be completed through the Cleveland County Literacy Office at 701-2682.
The library provides free one-on-one tutoring for adult learners, both for ESL students and also for native speakers of English who need help with their reading. Services are offered by county, with tutors and students meeting at one of the system’s 10 branch libraries.
The need for tutors is great, with a waiting list taking several months for students who sign up for the program.
Each prospective tutor must take part in one training before being placed with a student they will work one-on-one with on literacy skills. Tutors must be age 18 or older and be high school graduates. Tutors will receive information at the tutoring session as well as a plan to follow as they work with their students.
This training serves as the first of two parts in the literacy training for ESL tutors. To register for part two, call the Cleveland County Literacy Office at 701-2682.
