Norman to host Hunter Safety Education Course

Hunter safetyAccording to research by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, during the past 30 years, hunting related accidents and fatalities have declined by more than 70 percent in Oklahoma.

The organization gives much of that credit to mandatory hunter education courses that have not only reduced accidents within the state, but also in every state and Canadian province with similar programs.

The Norman Public Library partners with the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation for an upcoming Hunter Safety Education Course beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, in the Lowry Room of the library, 225 N. Webster Ave.

ODWC Warden Chad Strang will teach the course, which covers topics including firearms safety, wildlife identification, wildlife conservation and management, survival, archery, muzzleloading and hunter responsibility.

The course is a standard eight-hour course, and while there is no specific age requirement to enroll in hunter education, the minimum recommended age is 10. Any attendees under age 12 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Registration is required to take part.
