Learn the legend and enjoy the taste of the “Three Sisters Stew”

Purcell - Key Ingredients

Key Ingredients

As part of its continuing series of themed programming, the Purcell Public Library will present a “Three Sisters Stew” Demonstration at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Meeting Room of the library, 919 N. Ninth St.

Melissa Church of Chickasaw Nation Nutritional Services will present the demonstration on how to make the traditional stew, which combines the “three sisters” – squash, corn and beans, a story that dates back far into the region’s past.

Registration is not required to attend.

The program is part of the library’s celebration of the Smithsonian Institution exhibit “Key Ingredients: America by Food,” which will be on display through March 3.

The exhibit is a Smithsonian Institution outreach program that is visiting six sites in Oklahoma this fall and in 2012. The exhibit is part of Museum on Main Street, a partnership of the Smithsonian and state humanities councils, including the Oklahoma Humanities Council, which helped bring the exhibit to Oklahoma.

Further local support has been provided by the Pioneer Library System, the McClain County OSU Extension Office, Chickasaw Nation’s “Get Fresh” Program, The Heart of Oklahoma Chamber of Commerce, the McClain County Historical Society and Museum, the City of Purcell, Oklahoma Home and Community Education and the Friends of the Purcell Public Library.
