Your House Is On Fire, Your Children All Gone by Stefan Kiesbye
If you are a fan of Stephen King’s short story Children of the Corn included in Night Shift, you will probably enjoy this short novel. Perhaps enjoy might be a strong word, but this tale of a small, isolated German village takes unexpected twists and turns. The story is told from the points of view of a group of children as they manage the supernatural and human roadblocks in their lives.
Dream New Dreams: Reimaging My Life After Loss by Jai Pausch
Those of you who have read The Last Lecture know the story of Randy Pausch’s valiant battle with pancreatic cancer, a battle he ultimately lost. His wife has written a book that describes his battle from the wife/caregiver’s point of view. She reveals the sorrow, pain, and anger of the overwhelming job she undertook. This is a heart wrenching memoir of a truly brave woman.
Riot Act by Diane Tullson
I felt like a high school student looking for a short book for a book report when I chose to review this novella. However, I chose it because it presents a scenario common to teens can who find themselves at the wrong place at the wrong time. The two boys are swept up in the middle of a postgame riot amid a sea of drunken, crazed fans. The boys quickly succumb to the mob’s destructive behavior and must face the consequences of the aftermath. A good lesson to consider before finding yourself in a similar situation.
