POSITION:  Public Services Assistant/Children’s Department    
                
BEGINNING SALARY:  Grade 7, Base ($2,619/mo)
                    
WORKING CONDITION:  Full time position, 40 hrs/wk. Must be available to work a flexible schedule which includes evenings and weekends, in addition up to two weeks of “Mandatory New Hire Orientation & Training” located at the Administrative Offices in Norman.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs high-level customer service to Pioneer Library System and the Norman Public Library customers including children’s services, reference, reader’s advisory, children’s programming and outreach; performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
1.    Education and/or experience:
a.    Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university;
b.    Three years relevant experience;
c.    OR equivalent combination of technical training, experience or education.
d.    Valid Oklahoma driver’s license.
2.    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
a.    Understands and performs basic functions and tasks of common software programs and email applications.
b.    Uses and helps others use basic computer hardware.
c.    Ability to gain thorough knowledge of Pioneer Library System policies and procedures; 
d.    Ability to gain thorough knowledge of library circulation practices and procedures, children’s books, child development and education techniques as well as reader’s advisory and reference services and functions.
e.    Demonstrated ability in working with children and children’s programming.
f.     Skills in working with public, public speaking and conducting effective story times and other library programs.
g.    Working knowledge in the operation of computers and office machines, and standard office software products, electronic resources, internet and database retrieval.
h.    Strong skills in written and spoken business communications.
i.     Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
j.     Ability to retrieve and replace items from floor level to at least 5 ½ feet in height.

Sorts and shelves library materials; empties drop boxes and checks in materials; answers directional questions and assists customers in finding materials; assists staff with circulation tasks when needed; maintains an orderly and neat library environment; performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
1.    Education and/or experience:
a.    No previous experience required;
b.    Previous library and customer service experience preferred;
c.    High school diploma or GED;
d.    Or may be a current high school student;
e.    Must be 16 years or older.
f.    Valid Oklahoma driver’s license
2.    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
a.    Ability to gain knowledge of Pioneer Library System policies and procedures;
b.    Ability to understand the organization of the library collection;
c.    Ability to learn and integrate library system practices and procedures;
d.    Working knowledge in the operation of computers  and  office machines, and standard office software  products;
e.    Strong skills in written and spoken business communications;
f.     Ability to file and shelve library materials quickly  and accurately;
g.    Ability to work pleasantly with the staff and library customers;
h.    Requires physical effort in the handling of moderately light materials up to 25 pounds, standing for long periods of time and frequent stooping and bending;
i.     Retrieve and replace items from floor level to at  least 5 1/2 feet in height;
j.     Work a flexible schedule which may include evenings  and weekends based on
        fluctuating branch/department  demands.
