In Oklahoma 1 in 4 adults is functionally illiterate...

Imagine what life must be like for those who cannot read or write. Simple daily tasks like reading street signs and instructions are a source of frustration for them. In Oklahoma 1 in 4 adults are functionally illiterate and lack the skills necessary to cope in our complex society.

Cleveland, McClain, and Pottawatomie County Literacy Services provide free, confidential assistance to adults who want to improve their English, develop their reading and writing skills, or work on promoting reading as a regular family activity.

Services for Adult Learners:

  • Adult Basic Literacy - Provides one-on-one tutoring to those wanting to learn to read or improve their reading skills
  • English As A Second Language (ESL) - Teaches English to speakers of other languages through one-on-one tutoring
    • Mango Languages Online Database - Learn English and other foreign languages at your own pace from the comfort of your own home. Just login with your library card.
  • New Readers Book Club - A monthly reading and conversation group for all ESL and Literacy students and tutors
  • Materials and Resources - All learning materials print and non-print, are provided free of charge.

Make a Difference - Become a Tutor:

Tutors are volunteers from the community who would like to make a difference. You need no previous teaching experience; Pioneer's Literacy staff will provide basic literacy training and workbooks to assist the tutor and new readers. It just takes a few hours a week. Tutoring presents many opportunities to:

Share your skills in speaking, reading and writing
Make your own schedule
Participate in Continuing Education
Improve and change lives
Make a new friend

To get more information on participating please fill out the online request form, visit your hometown library, or call 405-701-2682.
