Pioneer Library System - Press Releases

Imagine the possibilities of literacyIt isn't something a lot of people talk about on a regular basis. Those who do talk about it, if it is in reference to a loved one, normally discuss it in hushed voices. The fact is at last count, 1 in 4 adult Oklahomans is functionally illiterate.

While you may not think the literacy of another impacts you, it does. Illiteracy costs the federal government $17 billion annually related to lost industrial productivity, unrealized tax revenues, welfare, poverty and other social ills. The wonderful thing is - each of us can be part of the solution.

Pioneer Library System Literacy Services are here to match tutors to students and help improve literacy throughout our three county service area. We currently have a list of more than fifty individuals awaiting ESL tutors and dozens more adults needing assistance in developing their reading skills.

So what do the tutors do?

ESL tutors help learners develop their English conversation skills, prepare for citizenship exams, study for TOEFL and and learn to use our Rosetta Stone ESL language software. Adult Literacy tutors help adults who have low literacy skills develop their reading comprehension, spelling and grammar skills. Many also help the students prepare to test for their GED.

Tutors are able to schedule sessions with their students based on what fits both of their schedules. Tutoring sessions occur in the library where students and tutors have easy access to all the supporting literacy material provided through PLS Literacy Services. Support materials include traditional paper materials and computer based resources, such as Rosetta Stone (English), downloadable audiobooks and citizenship prep software for ESL students. Online GED prep exams and other programs are available to assist beginning adult readers better use computers.

If you are interested in volunteering to help connect a fellow Oklahoman to the joy of reading and information for life long learning, by becoming a tutor for the ESL or Adult Literacy program, you can either fill out our online request form or call 405-701-2682 Monday through Friday.
