February is Black History Month and the Purcell Public Library will celebrate with a Black History Celebration on Tuesday, February 16 at 7 p.m. The festival will commemorate not just Black history in the US but also the city of Purcell’s Black history specifically. Related stories, games and crafts will be offered for the purpose of helping people of all ages and races learn, recognize and remember this history.
This year will mark the Purcell Public Library’s second Black History Celebration. Other Black History Month events throughout the Pioneer Library System include the Norman Public Library’s participation in the Twenty-first African American Read-In on Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m. and the Sixth Annual Crowns Tea on Sunday, February 28; and the Moore Public Library’s Third Annual Gospel Brunch on Saturday, February 20 at 11 a.m., among other events.
Black History Month is a national and federally-recognized celebration which began with the foundation of Negro History Week by Dr. Carter G. Woodson (pictured) in 1926. The week was expanded into a month 50 years later in 1976. The month of February was chosen because it includes the birthdays of civil rights activist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln.
